HIS 250 Age of Revolutions: America, France, Haiti, Latin America

The Age of Revolutions refers to a series of political tumults stretching from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. The primary focus of this course will be on those revolutions that built off of one another in the Atlantic World, starting with American Revolution and the French Revolution and ending with the Haitian Revolution and the Latin American Revolutions. Given the breadth of topics, the goal of this course is to understand how these revolutions were connected together. Political issues like citizenship and democracy will be complimented by a focus on revolutionary technologies (i.e. advancements in naval technology, print communications, and weaponry), an examination of early abolitionism and race, as well as the role of women in public sphere. This course cannot be used to replace US or Western Civilizations survey requirements.
