SPA 206 Conversational Spanish II

A course designed to improve speaking abilities while learning about Hispanic cultures, histories, and immigration to the United States through cinema. The course aims to provide the students with lexical and grammatical tools to allow them to engage in formal and informal discussion on a variety of contemporary social and cultural topics informed by the films provided. By the end of the course, students have a better command of all linguistic skills, especially listening comprehension, fluency, and accuracy in their speech, as well as a nuanced understanding of the larger social, political, and historical events in the Spanish speaking world that inspire immigration to the United States. The course explores the plurality of identities included under the term "Hispanic" and how these are constructed along ideas of race, gender, and class.
