AVS 239 Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation

An introductory look at the therapeutic application of adventure, this course will prepare students to consider positions in the adventure therapy industry and pursue an advanced degree in this growing field. This course will examine theoretical foundations and guiding principles supporting the use of adventure, stages of individual and group work, the use of games/activities/challenges with different groups and the challenges that may occur, and finally policies and procedures employed in this field. Emphasis will be placed on accreditation standards for adventure programs defined by the Association of Experiential Education and the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs.
