AVS 224 Fundamentals of Backcountry Skiing
A comprehensive Nordic skiing course designed to introduce students to the technical aspects, tactical concepts, and standards of practice fundamental to Backcountry Skiing. This course encompasses instruction in Cross Country, Telemark and Backcountry Skiing. Emphasis is placed on developing efficient and effective technique to build the foundational skills necessary to pursue extended backcountry tours. Students will learn basic ski mountaineering skills, advance skiing skills in off-piste and back country terrain, navigation and route selection, uphill techniques, avalanche theory and skills, and risk management strategies. Prerequisite: HED 108 and either PED 154 or PED 174. Corequisite: AVS 233.
