TRIO Upward Bound

SUNY Adirondack's TRIO Upward Bound program is fully funded by the United States Department of Education to serve 123 students from Fort Ann, Fort Edward, Glens Falls, Hudson Falls and South Glens Falls, North Warren, Warrensburg, Corinth, Salem, Argyle, Hartford, Granville, and Whitehall high schools at no cost to the students or their families. Upward Bound provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

Upward Bound provides year-round services to student participants. During the academic year, students work closely with their Upward Bound advisor during in-school visits, and receive services in some or all of the following areas: tutoring and mentoring, academic and career counseling, personal advisement, work-study/job shadow programs, ACT/SAT preparation, financial aid and financial literacy, and college trips. The summer program is offered on the SUNY Adirondack campus. During the six-week program, required courses in math, laboratory science, composition and literature, and foreign language are offered, as well as elective courses, a residential component, personal growth, and leadership development opportunities.

Students are also offered the opportunity to participate in community service, recreational activities, cultural events, and overnight college trips that will help them to build new and lasting relationships with other TRIO Upward Bound students and develop a greater understanding of the world around them. The shared goals among all activities and courses provided through TRIO Upward Bound are designed to expose students to new and different experiences, teaching them to become active participants in their own learning, and preparing them for the social and academic challenges of postsecondary education.
